About the Guidebook
On the 5th December 2013 one of the greatest people in world history passed away. Many great tributes have been made about Nelson Mandela from Barack Obama to the poorest of South Africa's township residents.
Nelson Mandela was the father of modern South Africa, the man who brought freedom and peace to millions of people. But he was also their greatest son. Inside the country he is revered and adored by everyone. And outside South Africa he will never be forgotten.
This travel guide tours South Africa and visits the important places in Mandela's life. It covers his birthplace to his first steps to freedom and beyond. But the guide also delves deep into the fight against apartheid and the monuments that celebrate the successful overcoming of the apartheid regime.
The guide covers attractions across the country. In one sense it's a tribute to Nelson Mandela. But it's also designed to ensure people can go beyond the surface of the great man. Following this travel guide will hopefully allow people to offer their own very real tribute to Madiba.
Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika - god bless Africa.
Local Knowledge & Cool Perks
This guide is written by Stephen Bailey, one of Buggl's staff who spent two years living in South Africa.
"What amazed me most about Mandela was how he was universally loved by everyone. I had expected adoration from my friends in the impoverished townships. But my most affluent white friends had similar love for the man. They had benefited from the white government's regime yet they would all recognise "Madiba" as the greatest ever South African hero.
I was lucky enough to work as a writer and video producer for the South Africa Youth Travel Confederation. After travelling the whole country I discovered both the famous and not so known sights that were integral to Mandela's life."
